Godspeed MAXX Sports Coilovers: What the Inverted Design Gives You

Godspeed MAXX Sports inverted coilover for the Honda Civic (MMXI7003)

SuspensionHOUSE Team |

Godspeed MAXX Sports is built for competition, where how the suspension is constructed matters as much as how it adjusts. Its inverted design gives you a reason to look beyond Godspeed's standard range: a strut built to carry big cornering loads while it keeps moving freely.

That's the whole story behind the inverted layout. A strut doesn't just control up-and-down movement. It also helps locate the wheel and carries the sideways force of every corner. An inverted strut supports those loads through a larger guided structure, which helps it resist bending and keep moving smoothly when the car is loaded up.

Godspeed lists MAXX Sports kits for off-road competition use only, so this guide is about race and track builds.

What inverted construction means

In a conventional strut, the piston rod sticks up out of the damper body. An inverted strut flips that around: the rod points down, and the assembly is supported by a larger outer tube.

Why that matters becomes obvious in a corner. The tire is generating big sideways forces, and the strut is part of what holds the wheel in place. Those forces try to bend the strut while it's also moving through its stroke. A larger, bearing-guided structure resists that flex and lets the suspension keep moving freely under load. For the driver, that means precise, consistent response when the car is working hardest, including when a loaded wheel hits a bump mid-corner.

Construction can differ front to rear depending on the car's suspension layout, so check the details for your exact kit.

Adjustable damping

MAXX Sports still gives you adjustable damping, so you can tune the response softer or firmer alongside the kit's spring and mount package. The current Civic MMXI7003 has 20 damping positions. Some older, discontinued Sports kits had 33, and standard MAXX has 40. Those numbers describe different products and generations, not a ranking: what matters is whether the valving and range suit your car.

A real example: the eighth-generation Civic

The current Civic MMXI7003 runs 7 kg/mm front and 5 kg/mm rear springs, with 20 damping positions, front pillowball camber plates and the factory rear mounts. The camber plates give you alignment adjustment, and the pillowball gives you a direct, precise connection, at the cost of some extra noise and vibration. On a competition car, that's an easy trade.

Those 7/5 kg/mm Sports rates are actually lower than the 10/14 kg/mm on the standard MAXX Civic MMX2110. That's a good reminder that a more specialized suspension doesn't need the biggest spring-rate number to do its job. It's the complete package that counts.

Fitment note for USDM Civic Si owners: the FG2 coupe runs 2006–2011 and the FA5 sedan runs 2007–2011. The current MMXI7003 is also a different kit from the discontinued MMXI-7003-2019, which had 33 damping positions.

MAXX Sports vs standard MAXX

Standard MAXX gives you 40-way damping, a rebuildable monotube and car-specific springs and mounts. Sports adds the inverted construction for competition use. Choose based on what you're building: a fast street car that sees the occasional track day is a standard MAXX car, and a dedicated race or time-attack build is a Sports car.

Civic owners can compare against the standard MAXX MMX2110, and RSX owners against the standard MAXX MMX2270-A. The older RSX Sports kit, MMXI-7001-A, has been discontinued.

Where it fits in the Godspeed range

The Mono-SS brings height and damping adjustment to a budget build. The Mono-RS adds finer damping adjustment. Standard MAXX steps up to the top-tier hardware, and Sports brings inverted competition kits into the range. Our recommendation

Put MAXX Sports on the shortlist if you're building for competition and there's an inverted kit for your car. You're choosing it for the complete construction and damping package, built for that job.

MAXX Sports kits aren't listed in our online store yet. Send us your car and what you're building, and we'll confirm the right part number, fitment and lead time. We've been an authorized Godspeed dealer since 2014, so we'll help you get it right.
